Azarenka loses in Roland Garros opener

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – Belarusian world number 18 Victoria Azarenka lost to World No.42 Bianca Andreescu of Canada, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, in the first round of the French Open, BelTA has learned.

The match lasted for two hours and 30 minutes. Bianca Andreescu will next play world number 75 Emma Navarro of the United States.

Earlier, world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus advanced to the second round seeing off Ukraine’s wold number 39 Marta Kostyuk, 6-3, 6-2. The Belarusian will next face world number 214 Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus, who defeated Hungary’s world number 97 Panna Udvardy, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-1. Belarus’ world number 51 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to world number 127 Clara Tauson of Denmark, 2-6, 0-6. Belarus’ world number 73 Ilya Ivashka lost to world number 19 Alex de Minaur of Australia, 1-6, 7-5, 1-6, 3-6 at the start of the men’s singles.

In the women’s doubles Victoria Azarenka paired with Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia will face Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi and Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalikova, Belarus’ Lidziya Marozava and Spain’s Rebeka Masarova will take on Russians Veronika Kudermetova and Lyudmila Samsonova, Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich and Brazil’s Ingrid Martins will play Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu and Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina. In the men’s doubles opener Ilya Ivashka paired with Australia’s Alexei Popyrin will face Francisco Cerundolo and Federico Coria of Argentina.

The total prize money at Roland-Garros in 2023 across all male and female tournaments comes in at €49.6 million. The singles winners in either tournament will receive €2.3 million and 2,000 points.
