Italian Open: Sasnovich loses to Vekic in round two

MINSK, 12 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 44 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Croatia’s world number 24 Donna Vekic, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, in the Italian Open second round, BelTA has learned.

The match lasted for two hours and 15 minutes. The Croatian player will next face Russia’s world number 16 Liudmila Samsonova. Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Canada’s world number 50 Leylah Fernandez of Canada, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3, in the opener.

Belarus’ world number 17 Victoria Azarenka reached the Italian Open round three after seeing off world number 36 Sloane Stephens of the United States, 6-4, 6-3. The Belarusian will next play world number 23 Madison Keys of the United States.

Belarus’ world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka lost 6-7 (4-7), 2-6, to world number 134 Sofia Kenin of the United States in the opener.

In the doubles round one Victoria Azarenka and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on Russians Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Last week the Belarusian-Brazilian duo won the doubles event in Madrid. Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Sofia Kenin will face the Italian tandem of Angelica Moratelli and Camilla Rosatello in the round of Last 32.

The tournament in the Italian capital will be over on 21 May.
