Sabalenka to face Sakkari in Madrid Open semifinal

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – Belarusian world number two Aryna Sabalenka will play world number nine Maria Sakkari of Greece in the Mutua Madrid Open semifinal, BelTA has learned.

The two rivals are set for their ninth meeting on tour, with Sabalenka leading the head-to-head series 5-3.

On her way to the Madrid Open semifinal the best Belarusian player avenged her Miami loss to world number 44 Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round and then eased past Colombia’s world number 115 Camila Osorio, 6-4, 7-5, and Russia’s world number 194 Mirra Andreeva, 6-3, 6-1, and also defeated Egypt’s world number 59 Mayar Sherif, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Aryna Sabalenka won the tournament in 2021.

The second semifinal will feature world number 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland and Russia’s world number 13 Veronika Kudermetova.

In the doubles semifinal Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on Taylor Townsend of the United States and Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.

The tournament in Madrid will be over on 7 May.
