MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number two Aryna Sabalenka lost to world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), in the three-hour long Madrid Open final, BelTA has learned.
Last year the Belarusian won the event, defeating Iga Swiatek, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In 2021 Aryna Sabalenka rose the Madrid Open trophy for the first time, beating the then world number one Ashleigh Barty of Australia.
The 2024 Madrid Open final became 27th for Aryna Sabalenka played under the WTA aegis. She won 14 of them. The 2024 Madrid Open winner earned 1,000 points and €963,000.
