Belarus’ Ziaziulin secures Olympic berth

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Belarusian weightlifters took part in the 2024 IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, the last qualifying event ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, BelTA has learned.

In order to qualify for Paris, each athlete had to compete in at least five qualifying competitions. In each weight category, the top ten weightlifters in the world rankings were awarded a ticket to the Games. The Olympic berth holders in the 102kg weight category were named on 11 April. Belarus’ Eduard Ziaziulin came to the tournament in Thailand with his best total of 436kg in the seventh spot.

Eduard Ziaziulin’s performance at the 2024 IWF World Cup was not a lucky one as the weightlifter failed to hold the starting weight of 200kg and was left without a score. Fortunately, this fact did not affect Eduard’s place in the rankings. Only four weightlifters were able to lift more than 436kg in total. Two of them were already ahead of the Belarusian in the rankings, and two more were not included in the overall standings because of the national quota limitation. As a result, Eduard Ziaziulin remained seventh to secure his Olympic license.

Thus, Team Belarus at the 2024 Paris Olympics will include three weightlifters: Eduard Ziaziulin, Siuzanna Valodzka (71kg), and Yauheni Tsikhantsou (102kg), who also won bronze at the 2024 IWF World Cup. The weightlifting event in Paris in scheduled for 7-11 August.
