Belarusian players lose in US Open qualifying

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 784 Egor Gerasimov lost to Japan’s world number 202 Shintaro Mochizuki, 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 1-6, in the US Open qualifying, BelTA has learned.

In the first qualifying round Belarus’ Olga Govortsova lost to world number 922 Valerie Glozman of the United States, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-6.

Earlier, Belarus’ world number 162 Iryna Shymanovich saw off world number 100 Jaquelline Cristian of Romania, 6-3, 6-1. The Belarusian will next face Russia’s world number 229 Tatiana Prozorova who defeated Belarus’ world number 204 Yuliya Hatouka, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. tennis players need to go through three qualifying rounds in order to reach the main draw.

The main draw matches will be played in New York from 28 August to 10 September. The total prize money for this year’s US Open is $65 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles will earn $3 million each. Last year the US Open was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
