Belarusian PM: Sport is important element of public diplomacy

MOSCOW, 18 December (BelTA) – Sport remains an important element of public diplomacy, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at a meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council that discussed ways of strengthening cultural and humanitarian cooperation in Moscow on 18 December, BelTA has learned.

“The 2nd CIS Games featuring about 2,200 athletes from 22 countries was an unforgettable event for Belarus,” Roman Golovchenko said. He also thanked the CIS states for sending their sports teams to Belarus to participate in the Games. “It was with pleasure that we passed the CIS Games baton to Azerbaijan,” the prime minister said.

Next year, Russia plans to host the first World Friendship Games. Roman Golovchenko wished the Russians the successful conduct of this tournament. “Belarus is preparing to take part in this sport event free of politiccs which, unfortunately, is now part of international sport,” he said.
