Sabalenka suffers defeats in Cancun semis

MINSK, 6 November (BelTA) – World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus lost to world number 2 Iga Swiatek of Poland 2-6, 3-6 in the semifinal of the GNP Seguros WTA Finals, BelTA has learned.

Sabalenka placed second in the Bacalar Group. She came over Greece’s Maria Sakkari (9) 6-0, 6-1 and Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and lost to Jessica Pegula of the United States (5) 4-6, 3-6.

In the final, Iga Swiatek will face Jessica Pegula, who beat her compatriot Cori Gauff (3) in the other semifinal 6-2, 6-1. Both finalists won four matches. If Iga Swiatek wins the final, she will overtake Aryna Sabalenka as world’s number one.

The final is scheduled for 5 November. This year, total prize money for singles and doubles will be $9 million.

The WTA Finals have been held since 1971. Last season the winner was France’s Caroline Garcia who beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
