Minister: Belarus has changed the CIS Games format

MINSK, 26 June (BelTA) – We have changed the format of the 2nd CIS Games, and determined the sports in a collegial way, Belarusian Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk told foreign journalists during a visit to Dinamo Stadium in Minsk on 26 June, BelTA has learned.

“We have changed the format of the Games. The 1st Games were held in Kazan, in one city. We are going to host the Games in 11 cities: Minsk, Brest, Grodno, Vitebsk, Orsha, Mogilev, Gomel, Zhlobin, Soligorsk, Borisov, and Molodechno. We have a wide geography of this event,” the minister stressed.

Sergei Kovalchuk said that all 20 sports were determined in a collegial way by representatives of the CIS countries. The list of sports determined for the Games also includes beach soccer and beach volleyball. “We have no seas, but we will hold beach soccer and beach volleyball competitions. We are developing these sports as well. Brest will host swimming and handball competitions, Grodno – weightlifting and field hockey, Vitebsk – Thai boxing, Orsha – boxing, Mogilev – karate and archery, Gomel – judo, Zhlobin – sambo, Molodechno – beach volleyball, Borisov – mini-football, Soligorsk – freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling, and Minsk will play host to competitions in nine sports. We invite everyone to our country to participate and enjoy the culture, customs, traditions, nature of our country, and most importantly, our cordiality and hospitality,” Sergei Kovalchuk added.

Foreign journalists are on a press tour in Belarus on 25 June-1 July ahead of the 2nd CIS Games. Taking part in the press tour are 14 journalists from Russia, China, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.
