US Open: Belarus’ Azarenka loses in round two

MINSK, 31 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 18 Victoria Azarenka failed to reach the US Open round three, BelTA has learned.

In the second round the former world number one lost to China’s world number 44 Zhu Lin, 3-6, 3-6. The Chinese player will next face world number 13 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. In the opener Victoria Azarenka powered past France’s world number Fiona Ferro, 6-1, 6-2.

World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus moved to the US Open second round, seeing off Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska, 6-3, 6-2. The Belarusian will next play world number 96 Jodie Burrage of the UK.

In the women’s doubles opener Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova lost to Indonesia’s Aldira Sudjuadi and Miyu Kato of Japan, 5-7, 3-6. Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich and Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia lost to Desirae Krawczyk of the United States and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands, 4-6, 3-6. Belarus’ Lidziya Marozava and Brazil’s Ingrid Martins lost to Russia’s Anastasia Potapova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6.

On 31 August Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on Hungarian players Timea Babos and Anna Bondar.

The main draw matches will be played on the Flushing Meadows courts through 10 September. The total prize money for this year’s US Open is $65 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles will earn $3 million each. Last year the US Open was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
