Belarus’ Shymanovich advances in Roland Garros qualifying

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 211 Iryna Shymanovich upset world number 278 Margaux Rouvroy of France, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4), in the French Open second-round qualifying action, BelTA has learned.

In the first round the Belarusian defeated Joanna Garland Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 6-0. Iryna Shymanovich will next play Japan’s world number 189 Mai Hontama for a spot in the main draw.

Belarus’ world number 216 Kristina Dmitruk will face world number 127 Simona Waltert of Switzerland. In the opener the Belarusian took a solid win, 6-1, 6-3, over France’s Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard.

Belarus’ Olga Govortsova lost to Brazil’s Laura Pigossi, 1-6, 3-6 in the first round. Belarus’ Egor Gerasimov lost to France’s Laurent Lokoli, 3-6, 5-7.

A player needs to go through three qualifying rounds in order to reach the main draw. Playing in the French Open main draw will be world number two Aryna Sabalenka, world number 18 Victoria Azarenka, world number 50 Aliaksandra Sasnovich and world number 86 Ilya Ivashka. The main draw will be played from 28 May to 11 June.
